Call to Poets: Northfield Poet Laureate

Do you have a love and knowledge of poetry, experience writing or performing poetry, and a willingness to engage the community with poetry writing workshops and poetry readings? Consider nominating yourself to be Northfield’s next poet laureate.

Overview

The Poet Laureate is part of an overall effort to advance the visibility, quality and appreciation of poetic arts in schools, among practicing poets, and for public audiences. Our poet laureate position grants the artist the freedom to explore a variety of topics, with the primary goal of promoting poetry throughout Northfield. 

About the appointment

The Northfield Public Library, Arts and Culture Commission and the Library Board are the sponsors of the poet laureate project. An appointment is for three years. A $1,500 annual stipend will be provided by the Northfield Public Library to support the laureate’s work in schools, the library, and other settings, with an additional $2,000 annual budget for special events provided by the Friends and Foundation of the Northfield Public Library. The poet laureate is encouraged to pursue grant funding for special projects; library staff are be able to assist with grant seeking.

Selection criteria

  • A history of performance and/or publication of poetry;
  • A history of activity in the Northfield literary community, i.e., readings, publications, public presentations, and/or teaching;
  • An interest in working with a range of audiences, from K-12 students to senior citizens; 
  • An enthusiasm for poetry!
  • Poet must reside within the Northfield Public School district to be eligible.

Responsibilities

  • The poet laureate will host (or arrange for another local poet to host) the monthly Poetry Open Mic Evening (POME) at the Northfield Public Library, and for other poetry readings at the library or content, as requested;
  • The poet laureate will devise their own public poetry-related project during each year of the appointment, and apply for funding as needed. This project could be a reading (e.g., Poets at the Depot), a workshop or series of workshops, a publication, a public poetry installation, or other appropriate project.
